I've got a Sirio 5000 PL with a mag mount and I was wondering if I could use this at home or would I have to make some alterations to it.

Also with power supplies, can I run a CB and 100w amp from the same supply?

Thanks John

For the Sirio 5000 to work it would need a groundplane, so you would need to find some metalwork to mount it on.

You could, but it would have to be at least 12 amp continuous rated.

Am I right in thinking that if I plonk my magmount Sirio ML145 onto a metal biscuit tin in my shed then it should work ?

Yes, it will work, but probably won't get out very far compared to a properly mounted homebase antenae. Check the SWR before using it.

Cheers Enterprise.

Did that and SWR was above 3 tried adjusting but no joy so looks like I’ll be ordering a Homebase antenna soon

Try a basic 1/2 wave silver rod, available for around £30. Easy to SWR in apparently. Get some decent RG58 coax and PL259 plugs or buy a ready made up 10 or 20 metre coax length.

Silver rods are cheap, but Antennas like an iMax2000 or A99 ahve rings to tune them, much easier. But, they're more expensive.

If you're getting coax too, RG213U is cheap and very good but remember to buy the right PL259's to go with it.

Thanks my friends.

Not wanting to spend a lot initially as I need to see if I ‘get into it’ or not.

Will let you know how I get on

Years ago we used an old truck wheel with the mag mount, real sophisticated but it worked but what a bast*rd getting it into the loft, damn that thing was heavy!

We were under the impression that the SWR would be better with a higher density ground plane, IIRC the Aerial was easier to tune?

regards

It will tune better with a larger ground plane.

you can use your Sirio 5000 pl for a homebase if your Sirio has a 3/8 at the basement you'll need a ground plane kit or if your using a magmount & a metal roof on your garage stick it on top of the garage 😉
