gordon brown makes money by taxing the sales and licenses of the pmr radios

I have s set of Mitex radios bought from a major electronic retailor. they punch out 5 W so really you need a licence but in reality im never gonna get one.
Was up Scotland Loch Ness and i was getting over 10 miles in clear open space.
Good bit of kit i must say.

And i use them also when i nip the bottle shop as my wife may just want a pack of malteasers so can let me know hahahaha

I have a pair of Xtreme Slimtalk handsets and a pair of TTi PMR200W watch radios.

Neither are great. The Slimtalks were intended for motorcycle use.
Sometimes you get good TX, other times it's weak and distorted even under 20 yards at 40mph. Mine sits in an old ankle holster strapped to my knee - Perfect open space for unobstructed signal, but I guess the signal gets bounced off other cars or something. Best signal I ever got was about 1½ miles, talking to a guy who was manning a construction crane (hence the good signal). No idea why these guys were controlling such stuff with unprotected cheap 446s, though. The number of people whose transmissions would interfere at dangerous moments...

The 200W watches are surprisingly much better. Average of 300 yards between sets, while inside a busy hotel building with masses of concrete wall and stuff in between.

Best PMR I've used so far was the Midland G7. Well over 2 miles in busy Basingstoke!
It's not about luck, it's about skill.

Unfortunately not alot of the cheaper units have a great range. I can't believe someone was relying on 446 to operate a crane!

A good one to look at too is the Intek MT5050... http://www.thunderpole.co.uk/intek-mt5050.html

Line of sight, I guess it performed fine.
I'm just surprised they didn't use CTCSS or a more professional one with encrypted transmission.

I guess the main worry would be jokers on the same channel saying... "left a bit, right a bit, now drop it!!!"

I have a pair of Motorola Talkabout t5422 and Motorola XTR446, both PMR446, put them on scan and listen out when i go walking, not a particularly great range on them. I got given the XTR446's but I certainly wouldn't buy them , their audio circuitry is prone to going awall, mine did and they can't repair them because motorola don't give them the correct diagrams for any of the unlicenced radios my advice is stay away from the XTR446! The T5422 are fine fantastic little radio, rugged I have dropped mine quite hard a few times and just keep on going.
