Hello all I'm new to this forum and my knowledge of radios is small. I am desperately trying to learn though, so please be patient and explain things like you're talking to an idiot and you might be close. I currently use a Midland 42 and an Intek 5050 which, thus far, has been used on the road. So what is the gig with these Baofeng radios on ebay? They don't seem to use the same channels as my stuff but it appears that no licence is needed. They are higher power than my 446 and have a greater channel selection. They seem well priced and have lots of features but are they legal? in fact can any one fill me in on all the pros and cons as, on the face of it, they, might be worth adding to collection. I've also posted this one on the 446 page as I wasn't sure where it went. Answers on a postcard please. :D

I'm also fairly new to the radio scene however have spent a lot of time looking up info on the net and through forums. The models you have are a CB radio and PMR446 radio - both don't require a licence. Baofeng radio's cover UHF (400-480MHz) which covers 70cm Ham & PMR446 and some of them also cover VHF (136-174MHz) which covers 2m Ham. Ham channels don't require a licence to receive but a licence is required to transmit. I have a Baofeng UV-5R which I use to monitor my nearest 2m & 70cm repeaters as my radio scanner is busy with airband as I live up the road from Heathrow.

Ok cool. So I can own but not transmit! Might be worth a pop for the price. Thanks for the help. :D
