My base station scanner is an Icom IC R7000 Communications Receiver. It covers 25 to 2000 Mhz with no gaps, FM/AM/SSB with a good few buttons and knobs to play with. I have it running off a Watson Angler indoor antenna via a pre-amp. As I live up here by the sea, I listen to the Marine frequencies quite a bit, pick up aircraft up to 180 miles away on VHF on the trans-Atlantic routes (if a plane is going to US or Canada it's flight path passes my part of the world) and I also have 2m Ham repeater frequencies programmed in (no luck in picking anything up yet).

A good frequency guide book is a MUST! I would buy one of those first and go through it, see what you're interested in listening to and what's about in your area and then decide what kit you're going to buy.

Wow! That looks a cool set-up!! I'd love an outdoor antenna (can't put one up 'cause of planning regs, live in a conservation area). The book you get is the BEST!!! It's been VERY useful for programming my radios!!!! :D
