Hi. If i bought a bought a big aerial for my hand held scanner would it increase the distance of my signals or would it simply make the signal clearer?

Do you mean an outside pole mounted aerial or do you mean a bigger "rubber duck" type aerial to fix on the top of your hand held scanner?

A bigger "rubber duck" aerial will give you only a very marginal improvement.

An outside pole mounted antenna, mounted above your house if possible, will give you the best results. It will enable you to listen to signals from far away as efficiently as your hand held radio will allow.

Location is everthing with antennas, try listening to your hand held scanner from the top of a big hill and you will hear what I mean!
