Hi all,

Thinking about buying an icom 706 mk2, been offered one thats "faulty" as it receives fine but when you TX on 2M it only pushes out 2-3Watts and on HF it drops to milliwatts   The chap says he paid for it to have its "finals" replaced but the problem is still there and he thinks its on the filter board now and he wants to cut his losses. How hard/much would this be to get repaired? Or is it past the point of repair ?

Thanks

Cameron

hi cam

ncie to see you got the callsign through , and on subject of first radios, i see you looking at the icom 718,
what you might have to consider is what bands you you want to use , as that mentioned radio is hf primarily, and wether you want to buy the vhf/ uhf radio seperately .
then there is the matter of homebasee solely or occasional mobile.
lot depends on costs involved.
amateur radio repairs are expensive, so i tend to stay clear of second hand radios with so called minor faults, ect..
there are a lot of radios on the market depending on ones approach to usage.

i use the yaesu ft857d for mobile use , or you might venture down the 144 / 433mhz route for starters.
whichever way you go , i know you'll enjoy it .
try to stay away fromthe echolinks, ect as real contacts are only made and enjoyed through direct rf contacts through your antenna systems , rather than internet aided lol..

i see a lot of chaps get on the echolink and lose the enjoyment of pulling a contact out of the pileups and lift conditions.
cheers cam have fun

yes stampman , i agree on the point you make. my comment was mainly based on the amount of people , who have antennaes up inthe air, but choose not to use them much, but spend it mostly on the so called digital modes, ect.
so in some areas it practically deserted for local activity and hence why some repeaters have folded up.
on vhf/uhf in particular.
down our way , there are well over 80 hams , but if you catch 5 on air, your doingwell on s20

i justt think that new people into the hobby , can experience the real side of things (old sshool ) lol
i can still remember my first contacts with a smile l, both on chat and cw...

but i do understand its a hobby made up of lots of bands.modes ect.
i personally enjoy the microwave tv and ssb upto 10ghz..
but use top band through to 10 ghz but only upto 2.4ghz mobile ..
ham radio /cbrad use and enjoy..

i agree about the air waves not being used our club must have one of the highest through put of licenses in the country but once they have passed you never hear them on the air
so i don't know the solution gb3mp has a group on every morning but after that it goes very quite for the rest of the time
