I can't put an antenna on the roof, my home is less than 400m from the local Search and Rescue helicopters base, so during bad weather they can be taking off quite low. This means I can't stick an antenna up on the roof.

So, I've been doing some messing about with wire dipoles with little success thinking long and hard. At the bottom of my garden, about 10m from the house is the remains from a tree I cut down a couple of years ago. The stumps about 7' tall and fairly sturdy, so I'm figuring that If I used a short mast of say 3m tall, with a home base antenna, I'll get something that will allow an antenna with base height of about 15' up. As theres trees in the vicinity about 20m away, I shouldn't get any heli related problems. It still won't be fully above the roofline, but to the rear of my home is a fairly open field, which I think will offer a better location.

Now for what antenna to pick (the bit I'd like a spot of advice on)?

From the following, which would be most suited to the kind of location I'm intending on sticking the antenna?

Thunderpole 5
5/8 or 1/2 silver rod
Antron 99 (maybe adding the firestick top part later)

Also as I'll be essentially mounting to a tree, will the antenna need grounding?

Also as all of my CB experience surrounds mobile installations in the past, how do you ground an antenna thats made from fibre glass, like the Antron?

The Thunderpole 5 can also be used with the 'Thunderpole A99 Upgrade'.... http://www.thunderpole.co.uk/a99-upgrade-stick.html

Plus we have had reports from more than one person saying that the Thunderpole 5 out performs the Antron 99.

From what I've read, the Thunderpole 5 is better built too.

Does the A99 Upgrade Stick require much work to make it work with the Thunderpole 5? or is it just plug and play?

Also what about grounding/earthing the Thunderpole 5? Is it needed, or not?

Check my youtube and see the fire up (search it)

I connected the fire up and needed no swr adjustment here. Here is the swr path on the mfj antenna analyser

Made with 4w FM

26000 2.0
26500 1.8
27000 1.7
27500 1.5
28000 1.6
28500 1.7
29000 1.8

And does although make the antenna overall length shorter but it seems to work really well.
