The latest documentation regarding this potentially big CB invigorating change.

PDF Document: ECC Decision of 24 June 2011 on the harmonised use of frequencies for Citizens' Band (CB) radio equipment

From this source: European Communications Office

It will probably be blocked by the UK government (Ofcom) for reasons known only to them, but the rest of Europe looks to be getting 4W FM/AM & 12W SSB, as a unified CEPT band, theoretically from October 1st 2011.
that the preferred date for implementation of this ECC Decision shall be 01 October 2011

Theoretically, this only relates to the CEPT 40 (the EU/EC) channels.

Basically, the CEPT 40 channels are supposed to be a European wide set of channels that all European countries agree to use in the same way. A common ground, so to speak. What they do with their additional (non CEPT 40) channels is down to the individual countries.

As far as I know, the UK40 are safe for as long as UK40 CB equipment is still operational.

... of course, Ofcom are a law unto themselves, so this could all be turned on its head. I really do wonder what colour the sky is in 'Ofcom land'. :?

It would be good if it was adopted in the UK. I'm hoping that it's just too much trouble for Ofcom to say no. They usually take the path of least resistance (or work).

However, the good news is that regardless of what our myopic regulator does, due to the inevitable increase in demand for these new capability radios in Europe, we will still see new FM/AM/SSB capable CB radios on the market. :D

I like your optimism, but I'm still not holding my breath though.

Ofcom have no say in the matter it's a European Directive they have to implement it.

I like your thinking and I hope you are correct. There were rumours circulating that the UK and at least one other country were not going to implement the new standard.

I'm hoping the European implementation is truly Europe wide, it would be a really positive step forward for European CB radio. :D

It will be a great day for sure! =D>

Not only because we would get FM/AM/SSB CB, but because Ofcom have publicly stated their opposition to it!
