help with mobile cb please

hi i have just installed a cb in landrover with antenna on gutter mount and when i press mic reading is swr maximum , i have also conected wire from antenna to battery neg to ground it ,i this ok
i am very confused what to do next and am thinking of buying swr meter ?

sorry been distracted by a small problem swr = maxim do you mean its reading in the RED all the way through

you need to SWR always, get one asap, but that doesn't sound like your problem

the aerial needs to make good contact with a "ground plane", think of it as a metal mirror to reflect the waves up & outwards - aluminium body work doesn't do this

the aerial negative/coax shield needs to be "earthed" to negative, which the neg power lead to the radio should achieve, but another wire to a good earth will help.

make sure your extra neg wire is not touching the aerial or centre wire, but just the outer sheath

no need for wire from base of antenna to neg on battery in fact it complicates it just go basic gutter mount in to roof and then check swr
