Bl**dy magnum 257
I was fairly happy with the Ranger and the 2970 certainly kicked out some power - 150W on SSB and the one I had was professionally "tweaked" for 1200W AM or FM.
The only downside for me were the fiddling little knobs, set pretty close together. I have a type of arthritis and although it doesn't effect my hands too much, I struggle with what I called "n1pple tw1ddling" on that Ranger, especially getting the Clarifier spot-on during a contact. The Kenwood is super with the BIG tuning knob in the middle - dead easy to grip - and all the other bits and bobs are well spaced.
If anyone was looking for an honest Mobile SSB, with full frequency coverage (rather than limited to channel frequencies, and KC shift etc) I'd be happy to recommend the Ranger. The idea of under-dash mounting a full-size Kenwood or a Yaesu or whatever strikes me as absurd, but that Ranger would be a cracker in a motor. Of course, tweaking your clarifier whilst trying to catch a faint contact from XYZ Division while belting down the outside lane of the M1 is a fairly fast-track route to suicide in my opinion

ill have to take a treck up my hill and have a listen to the new set once you have sorted your slight problem.
i have just put my old cd players on sale im hoping for a quick sale, i doubt it will be 8 mins though lol..... i wish.
the lincolns a bit of a pig on the clarifyer as its such a wide shift on it its very sensative so very easy to go to far past someone who is only just off freq.
like you say though steve its a bit dangerous on the road while twiddling knobs, i do use my rig on ssb while moving but i have not had to use my clarifyer in a long time so i just go up 10 and thats me... still a bit naughty though

I DO hope to be on the air again by Sunday. The reel of decent coax arrived this morning, so I need to sweet-talk the missus into getting one of the antenna down (damn arthritis is a grave inconvenience and means I have to beg, plead and be nice if I need anything shifted). Fingers-crosased that the coax solves the problem.
So, if you're on Clee Hill Porky - we really SHOULD Be able to finally get a contact. I've talked to Clee Hill on numerous occasions when Bob or Dave is up there.
