Hi there,
Does anyone know of the correct procedure for freq expansion for the Midland 48 Excel; The reason I ask is I have found a german post through mods.dk, which suggests its a case of just moving the jumpers to suit the type of expansion you require labelled s1 thru s4. Ive looked at schematics and cannot find these jumpers !!

Yeah! Get it done by a rig doc!! Phoning & emailing around will get you an answer of who can do it and whether it can be done!!! I got my Midland 8001 modified professionally recently - it didn't take long and it was VERY reasonable (cost).

I appreciate the replies - :!:
The reason I posted is simply to ask if anybody has been able to do this modification !!

Im also to understand the Excel model ( Not Multi ) will select via button sequence the various EU channels as well as UK in factory preset, and is not just your bog standard 80ch radio from posts Ive found on other forums; there does seem to be a real confusion between the Excel and Excel Multi with regards to the channels available, in my case - my 48plus does have all the channels that a 48 plus multi has !! and this is a factory standard set with no mods.

If its possible the radio will expand upto 10m. You then have a choice of ie 27.000mhz(PX) freq ending in 0 or 27.555mhz(RU) freq ending in 5 all the way thru to the 10m band, while retaining the original factory presets and being able to TX and RX in the 400ch mode which you have created by moving the jumper pins within S1 thru S4, the radio in its factory preset will TX a dead key on PX and RU if selected without the Modification. They also inform that if the 10m mod is carried out the radio will need some realignment - thats when you need the rig doctor.

So the question remains has anyone achieved this Mod or know of another.

They're not jumpers, they're contacts and you need to re-solder them. This link tells you what you need to do and gives a photo of where they are. Obviously this is at your own risk. I'm not sure how you access AM and the other channels when you have done it, so you'll have to have a bit of a play about.
