hi all i am new to the world of CB but not new to land rovers and although i know this is where you introduce yourself i also have a question if i may.

i have a disco 2 i got a CB with a gutter mount.i made sure the gutter mount was making contact with metal with the screws that hold it in place, i have followed the instructions, set the cb in the centre box out of the way. plugged in and turned on as the instrcutions tell me to and tried to listen to anyone who may be on air. Nothing. i keyed the mic the tx light came on but nothing again. i checked the antena was secure no issues there. checked all the cables and connections no issues there. what could be wrong???

the sql does what it should do but still nothing ??????

this might not be the right place but hopefully someone can help

many thanks

you must always swr a new antenna install, or you could wreck the transmitter in the cb radio.
think swr is explained here http://www.thunderpole.co.uk/cb_radio_guide_swr.html

Most landys I think are made of ali, which is not a good groundplane. This may give you trouble with the swr.

Don't transmit on the radio till the swr is sorted...

hi thanks for this, mine is above the drivers door and now confused why it might not be working please tell me how you set yours up.

i took the A post cover off on the outside and run the antenna cable underneith. then back into the car my understanding was that the antenna doesn't need to be tuned as this is already done by thunderpole.

firstly just about all antenna need tuning, since they rely on the vehicles groundplane, which is different on every veichle and mount location plays a big part too.

i would firstly check for continuity on the coax, most of the standard ants shouldn't give continuity across the sheild to the coax core. if there is you have a problem straight away. Some ants are an exception to this like sirios and wilsons. use a multimeter and check for a beep.

Also I always check that there is conti between a bolt somewhere on the vehicle and the coax sheild underneath the ant, this confirms a good ground connection between vehicle and coax sheild.

if this is ok then using a swr meter get the swr below 1.5 if you can. if swr is worse on channel 40 than on 1, then the ant is too long, cut a small bit off and try again...

when this is done you can use the swr meter (if it has a power measure function) to check that the radio output power is 4watts or there abouts.

after that assuming the radio is ok, all should be done.....
hope this helps

as above gutter mount dig into the metal and give a good earth the use ch1 and 40 to sort swr out if higher on 1 to start with then either bad earth or faulty antenna
