Rf gain is how strong you want to receive. When someone is talking try turning it up and down and notice your signal meter.
My understanding of the correct way to set the RF Gain is:stampman wrote:should always be turned up to full orit deafens the rig

Turn the Squelch down to minimum (fully open with all the background noise coming in).
Adjust the RF Gain until just before the needle starts to twitch (or just before the LED/Signal Bar starts to light) because of background noise. You don't want to see background noise making your signal meter move.
Turn the Squelch up again until it cuts out the unwanted background noise.
If you are having difficulties picking up a specific breaker, then adjust the RF Gain to help reception.
If you have the RF Gain turned fully up all the time, you are just bring in all the unwanted background noise and it will look like you have a high signal level amount of background noise all the time.
If you turn it up, you just increase the amount of background noise you hear and you start to see the needle move with the background noise...stampman wrote:if you turn it down you will not hear the weak signals

You use the RF Gain to bring in stations you are having difficulty hearing, if you leave it on (all the way round) all the time;
a) you might as well not have a dial there, and b) will just have to turn up your squelch to compensate for the increase in background noise.
It's true to say that a radio without an RF Gain control on the front panel probably has this setting set high on a pot inside the radio.
rf gain to the max for me when i dx or i just cant pick out the weak stuff
but for local cb use i rf tune untill the needle moves and squelch out the crap
it depends what u use your radio for at the end of the day
i have to have rf gain to the max on usb or i just cant pick much up

I might sound a bit FIK but is there a way of adusting the RF gain on a Midland Alan as at max I still get 2 bars less than my other rigs a midland 38 and a superstar 3900 through the the same setup. IE same twig and vehicle. Tried a pre amp and all it does is increase the white noise but modulation is still unreadable.P.S. checked out the SWR and it is reading 1to 1 through my modulator dont really want to change as I know for a fact that I kick out better than I recieve

I have noticed this also, i can kick out far better than i can receive on my midland alan 78 plus multi, and my SWR is 1:1, i guess it's down to the factory meter settings default as stampman says.. i will have to run a test when i have fixed my other rig.KAMASA wrote:I might sound a bit FIK but is there a way of adusting the RF gain on a Midland Alan as at max I still get 2 bars less than my other rigs a midland 38 and a superstar 3900 through the the same setup. put the dial all the way to the right, full / maximum.
its a way of listening to the strongest signal coming in.
if you have 2 contacts, one weak and one strong on the same channel, you can mask the weak signal.
i have it on full, but rarely ever have to use or touch them. more knobs is a bonus.
