Hi,

Check that wax hasnt got into RV401 next to the vco can.
Could actually be that the DEV is set too high making it sound awfull..
One way to prove my point is to turn down the front panel mic gain a bit and get an honest rig check !
Does it have its original mic ?

It would seem you have a leaky RF path !
If you have tried known good antennas and the swr is of know stock then id hazzard a guess that the decoupling capacitors around the antenna socket of the radio are faulty or probably broken.

this is assuming that the roof of your car is metal and NOT ...

Check the battery, ie: connect the radio to a different car battery in the same vehicle if that solves it you have a High Resistance battery ! Ive seen similar issues on PMR equipment, Can also be caused by a corroded fuse / Holder.

An educated guess, but sounds like you have a dry solder joint in the radio.
It was common on the Danitas to find a dry solder joint under the VCO screening can. (after a couple of years in use)
You can prove it by removing the top cover and gently with a plastic biro (no metal) probing the circuit ...

EM27 Faults !

The EM27 is a nice wee radio, however its had a few minor issues !

The squeeling fault is usually caused by the volume control pot being open circuit at one end. makes the radio Microphonic.
The dead fault is more often than not caused by the little battery/capacitor leaking and eating the print ...
